Tips for making my own indoor putting green?
If you can't use the puttacup as suggested above, or it just isn't what you want, I suggest the following.
Build a frame, similar to the one described on the puttacup web site under "build your own putting green". Make it the size and shape you want.
Place solid plywood in the area where you'll stand to putt and then use "wiggle wood" for the rest....yes, "wiggle wood". It's a plywood like product that's easily bent and shaped to form contours. I used in a home remodel....not for a putting green, but...
Just be sure to make the area you're going to stand on out of regular plywood, as wiggle wood isn't designed to support your weight. Of course, if you put more support beams under it, you can stand on it without problem.
Depending on the size of the green you build, you can get creative with the contours of the wiggle wood before placing the hole (or holes) and afixing your final carpeted surface.
If that's getting too complex, just build a platform as described, using pain old plywood throughout. Then, using rigid foam from an art supply store, make some contour shapes that you'll slip under the carpet as needed to give your green some break.
If you go this route, I suggest placing some velcro strips on the underside of the carpet and the top side of the foam blocks so you get firm contact between the carpet and foam and the carpet doesn't sink or move under the weight of the ball. I'd also put velcro on the plywood and underside of the foam blocks to keep them in place.
One of the aggravating things about draping a carpet over forms to give your artificial putting green contour is that the carpet and/or the forms move when the ball rolls over them. You need to take steps to keep them from moving.
As for the hole, you can buy some puttacups or just cut the appropriate sized hole in the plywood and carpet. Just frame out a small box under the hole(s) to catch the ball and keep it from rolling to a spot where you can't reach it.
Good luck.
